The opioid crisis remains a problem, especially for those who have difficulty getting off of narcotic pain killers. Doctors prescribe Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet and more to help their clients manage their pain. However, some don’t consider the long-term impact this type of drug may have on a patient.

Since pain killers are so easily available, people quickly become addicted to opioids. However, there are several ways to wean yourself off these highly-addictive drugs. One method is to use buprenorphine. Using buprenorphine for chronic pain is an effective way to wean yourself off of other more dangerous pain killers and hard drugs.

There are some side effects that you may experience with buprenorphine. Here are some things to consider before you start taking it and what to ask your doctor before getting help with a pain killer addiction.

What is buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine is a drug that helps lessen or prevent withdrawal symptoms for those going off of narcotic pain medications. It works by releasing fewer endorphins than an opioid, giving your brain a much milder “high” as you wean yourself off the larger endorphin levels that come from pain killers.

What are the side effects of buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine has a few commonly known side effects that should go away with time. You may experience headaches, stomach aches, changes in bowel movements, insomnia, tongue pain and more. While these side effects are uncomfortable, they are likely temporary. If you notice they do not go away after a few days, talk with your doctor about alternative treatment plans.

More serious side effects require immediate medical attention. These side effects include signs of rashes or itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling in any area of the body, extreme agitation, hallucinations, unusual bleeding, dark-colored urine or yellow eyes. If you notice any of the following side effects, contact your doctor right away or go to the nearest hospital.

Can you overdose on buprenorphine?

Yes, you can overdose on buprenorphine. Overdoses are extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal. This is why it’s crucial to monitor your dosage and when you take your medication. Signs of overdose include pinpoint pupils, difficulty breathing, unresponsive or extremely tired and shallow breathing. If you believe that you or someone you know may have accidentally overdosed on buprenorphine, call 9-1-1.

Why should I take buprenorphine?

If you or someone you love is trying to handle an addiction to painkillers, heroin or another opioid drug, buprenorphine can help make it easier to get off of them. By mimicking the same feeling you have with a painkiller, you can slowly taper off without some of the more intense side effects you would find by tapering off a painkiller all on its own. However, these drugs are potent, so always check with your doctor before starting a buprenorphine treatment plan.
